Smooth Indian Sandstone Paving Features:

  • Captivating colours and natural variation enhance gardens and patios.
  • Sawn and honed finish creates a smooth, contemporary appearance with straight edges.
  • Honed smooth Indian sandstone paving highlights prominent patterns and colours of natural paving stones, offering a degree of slip resistance, though lower than split riven sandstone.
  • Smooth Indian sandstone paving is available in a wide range of colours, from neutral tones to more vibrant options.
  • Consistent thickness allows easier installation compared with uncalibrated paving slabs.

How to Obtain Smooth Indian Sandstone Paving

  • Initial Cutting: Place the Indian sandstone block on the bed of the saw machine and cut it into roughly uniform-thickness slabs.
  • Rough Grinding: Roughly grind the top surface of each slab to achieve a smoother finish. The underside remains a standard sawn surface.
  • Slab Selection: Remove particularly thin slabs and use calibration machinery to reduce thicker slabs to a uniform thickness with a grooved underside.
  • Precision Cutting: Use an infrared saw machine to cut the processed slabs into the required specifications.
  • Packaging and Inspection: During packaging, approximately 5–10% of the undersides may remain grooved, while around 90–95% are fully sawn.

⚠️ Paving Slabs Direct Expert Advice:

Sandstone is naturally porous, and water staining effects are more pronounced when supplied in a honed smooth finish. To mitigate this, we advise sealing the undersides of all sawn sandstone paving with SBR adhesive prior to installation, ensuring uniform application and complete drying to establish a chemical barrier between the cement mixture and the natural paving stone. Furthermore, apply Lithofin Stain Stop W sealer to the top and sides to help prevent staining.

Due to the relatively low density of sandstone, sawn edges on honed smooth sandstone tend to be sharper than hand-chiselled edges. Chipping can therefore occur and cannot be fully avoided by any stone supplier. Customers who are particularly concerned about edge chipping are advised to avoid smooth sandstone with sawn edges, or alternatively hand-select slabs from a local yard at additional cost.

Images shown are representative of a specific batch and installation example. Variations may occur due to differences in natural stone batches, installation methods, sealing techniques or protective sealants used. No supplier can guarantee that the final installed appearance will exactly match reference images.

If customers have concerns about final appearance, we recommend reviewing images from multiple suppliers to gain a broader understanding of potential outcomes before purchasing smooth sandstone.

Natural stone supplied for paving is intended to be walked on and used over time. It is not a countertop or decorative item, and minor chips are a normal characteristic of paving-grade stone.

Eliminating all minor imperfections in mass-produced paving stone would significantly increase production costs. As an online supplier focused on competitive pricing, we are unable to meet aesthetic demands beyond standard paving-grade tolerances.

Polished or honed smooth sandstone may display natural surface characteristics such as colour variation, cloudy patches, veining or sparkle dots. These are acceptable features and do not affect overall appearance once installed. Claims relating to such natural characteristics are not accepted.

During the cutting process, slight variations in thickness may occur due to blade vibration. Minor deviations — including occasional slightly thinner slabs — are within accepted industry tolerances and do not affect normal use. Where a significant quantity of noticeably thinner slabs is reported, we will review the matter and may offer reasonable compensation. Slightly thicker slabs remain within manufacturing tolerance and are not eligible for claims.

How to Handle Chipping Issues of Smooth Indian Sandstone

When laying paving, minor chipping should not be a concern. After installation and jointing with Joint It Simple, any chipping can be addressed.

Unused or discarded slabs can be crushed into a fine powder and mixed with stone adhesive to form a paste. This can be applied to chipped edges to restore their shape and is a commonly used method by both builders and homeowners.
