Paving slabs are flat outdoor units used to create patios, garden paths, terraces, seating areas and other hard-landscaped surfaces. Common UK paving slabs include porcelain, Indian sandstone, limestone, granite and concrete, with each material offering different levels of durability, maintenance, texture and colour variation.

Paving slabs and patio slabs often describe the same products. “Paving slabs” is the broader term, while “patio slabs” usually refers to paving used specifically for a garden patio or outdoor seating area; material, thickness, finish, size and intended use are more important than the wording itself.

Garden paving is a general term for hard landscaping used in gardens, including patio slabs, paving slabs, paths, terraces, steps and seating areas. The most suitable paving depends on appearance, surface performance, maintenance, drainage and the expected level of use.

The best patio slabs depend on the required appearance, maintenance level and budget. Porcelain paving is popular for modern low-maintenance patios, Indian sandstone suits more natural and traditional gardens, while granite is often selected where strength and long-term wear resistance are important.

Porcelain, sandstone, limestone and granite are all widely used for garden paving when correctly specified and installed. The best choice depends on whether the priority is natural appearance, colour consistency, low maintenance, surface texture, strength or long-term durability.

Many outdoor patio slabs are approximately 20–25 mm thick, depending on the material and product specification. Outdoor porcelain is commonly around 20 mm, while calibrated natural stone paving is often around 20–25 mm, although the base and installation system are equally important.

The best paving slab size depends on the design and installation. Large formats such as 900 x 600 mm create a cleaner layout with fewer joints, while smaller slabs and mixed-size patio packs can produce a more traditional garden paving pattern.

Most permanent patio and garden paving requires a properly compacted sub-base, commonly MOT Type 1, followed by a full mortar bed. For a typical pedestrian patio, around 100 mm of compacted sub-base is commonly used, subject to ground conditions and expected loading.

Yes, most natural stone and porcelain patio slabs should be laid on a full mortar bed rather than isolated mortar spots. Full bedding provides more consistent support and helps reduce movement, hollow areas, cracking and loose paving.

Dense natural stone and porcelain paving should normally use a suitable slurry primer or bonding bridge on the complete underside before laying. This improves adhesion between the paving slab and mortar bed and reduces the risk of slabs becoming loose.

For most patio projects, around 10% extra paving is a practical allowance for cuts, selection and wastage. More complex garden paving with curves, steps, diagonal layouts or numerous edge cuts may require around 10–15% additional material.

Slip resistance depends on the paving material, surface finish and maintenance. Textured sandstone, flamed granite and suitable exterior porcelain are commonly used outdoors, but algae, moss, mud, grease and standing water can reduce grip on any garden paving surface.

Not all paving slabs need sealing. Porcelain normally does not require it, while sandstone and limestone may be left untreated or protected with a suitable breathable natural-stone sealer to reduce staining and make routine cleaning easier.

Good-quality paving slabs can remain serviceable for decades when correctly installed and maintained. Long-term performance depends on the paving material, sub-base, mortar support, drainage, jointing, traffic and site conditions rather than on the slab alone.
