Smooth Kandla Grey sandstone paving is characterised by calm mid-to-light grey tones with subtle, naturally occurring darker veining. The sawn and honed surface creates a clean, refined appearance that matures evenly over time, making it suitable for contemporary outdoor paving schemes.
This smooth-finished sandstone paving is produced from selected Kandla Grey stone beds known for consistent density and stable colouring. The material is specifically processed for outdoor use, offering a controlled, modern aesthetic while retaining the inherent qualities of natural sandstone.
Key Characteristics of Smooth Kandla Grey Sandstone Paving
- Clean, contemporary appearance suitable for modern outdoor spaces.
- Commonly used for patios, pathways and garden seating areas.
- Maintains its appearance in both wet and dry conditions.
- Provides practical slip resistance when correctly installed.
- Requires only routine, low-level maintenance.
- Performs reliably in typical UK weather conditions.
Smooth Kandla Grey sandstone paving is manufactured through a controlled process. Stone blocks are sawn into slabs, machine-cut on all sides and then honed to achieve a smooth surface with a subtle sheen. Alternative surface treatments, such as shot-blasting, may also be applied where a softer texture is required. All slabs are calibrated to a nominal thickness of 22 mm to support consistent installation.
Although Smooth Kandla Grey sandstone offers a high level of colour consistency, it remains a natural stone product. Minor tonal variation, veining and surface differences are inherent characteristics and may occur within the same batch. For the most balanced visual result, slabs should be mixed from multiple packs during installation.
⚠️ Paving installation guidance: Sandstone is a naturally porous material, and moisture-related staining can be more visible on honed smooth surfaces. To reduce this risk, it is recommended that the underside of all sawn sandstone slabs is sealed with an SBR slurry or similar bonding agent prior to installation, ensuring even coverage and full curing. A suitable breathable impregnating sealer, such as Lithofin Stain Stop W, may then be applied to the top and edges to help reduce staining during use.
Due to the relatively low density of sandstone, sawn edges on smooth paving can be sharp and are more susceptible to minor chipping than hand-dressed edges. Small chips may occur during handling and installation and are considered a normal characteristic of paving-grade natural stone. Customers who are particularly concerned about edge chipping should consider alternative finishes or be aware that selecting individual slabs in person may involve additional costs.
Sandstone paving is designed for outdoor flooring and will be walked on as part of normal use. It is not a countertop or decorative stone product. Minor edge chips and surface marks are a natural consequence of use and do not affect the structural integrity or long-term performance of the paving.
Eliminating all minor surface or edge imperfections from paving-grade natural stone would require extensive selection and processing, significantly increasing costs. As a supplier of competitively priced paving materials, such cosmetic characteristics are considered acceptable within normal industry standards.
Polished or honed sandstone may occasionally display small surface marks visible at close inspection. These do not affect the appearance once installed and are not considered defects. Customers are advised to ensure they are comfortable with the natural characteristics of smooth sandstone prior to purchase, as claims relating solely to minor cosmetic variation cannot be accepted.
During cutting and calibration, slight variations in thickness may occur due to manufacturing tolerances. Minor deviations, including occasional slightly thinner slabs, are generally acceptable and do not affect normal installation or performance. Where a significant number of slabs show unusual deviation, this may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Slightly thicker slabs are considered within standard tolerance and are not eligible for claims.
