The surface is not printed or moulded. It is created from real stone strips, usually with varied depths and natural face textures, giving the wall a genuine stacked-stone appearance.

The key value of true split face tiles is the real stone construction. Materials such as slate, quartzite, marble, sandstone, limestone and granite can all be used to produce this type of cladding. Because the stone face is naturally split, each panel has its own texture, shadowing and tonal variation.

Some products sold as split face effect tiles are actually porcelain or manufactured tiles with a stone-style surface pattern. These can be useful in some projects, but they should not be confused with real natural stone split face panels. A true split face tile should have real stone texture, real 3D depth and an interlocking panel design.

Split Face Tiles are suitable for a wide range of internal and external wall cladding projects. Outside the home, they are often used for garden walls, boundary walls, entrance walls, exterior features, raised beds and façade details. Standard plasterboard may not always be suitable, especially for heavier stone cladding or larger wall areas. Where plasterboard is present, the installer should check the load-bearing capacity and consider using a stronger backing board or more stable substrate before installation.

Split Face Tiles can be used in bathrooms and selected shower wall applications, but the installation must be prepared correctly. Natural stone cladding has texture and some degree of porosity, so it should not be treated as the waterproof layer of the wall.

In wet areas, the most important point is to waterproof the background properly before the stone panels are installed. The wall substrate should be tanked or protected using a suitable waterproofing system, particularly in shower zones and areas exposed to regular moisture.

The tiles provide the finished decorative stone face, while the waterproofing must come from the correct preparation behind the tiles. This is similar in principle to many mosaic or tile sheet installations used in wet areas.

Split Face Tiles are normally installed without traditional visible grout joints. The panels are fitted closely together so the Z-shaped edges interlock and create a continuous stacked-stone effect. This is one of the main reasons they are popular for feature walls and exterior cladding.

Sealing is not always compulsory for standard decorative use, but it can be helpful in areas where extra protection against moisture or staining is required. If a sealer is used, choose a breathable natural stone sealer and test it on a small area first to make sure it does not darken the stone or change the intended finish.
